Manitowoc Foodservice Recognized by McDonald’s as Sustainable Supply Award Winner
“Best of Sustainable Supply” Award Exemplifies Manitowoc Foodservice Commitment to Make a Difference
New Port Richey, FL - April 1, 2014 - McDonald's has announced its "2014 Best of Sustainable Supply" award winners in a report highlighting how suppliers achieved significant results by identifying opportunities and applying sustainable solutions in diverse places across the world. More than 600 entries were submitted, with Manitowoc Foodservice earning a prestigious place alongside 50 other leading projects. McDonald's leadership and external subject matter experts recognized Manitowoc Foodservice and its Convotherm facility for sustainability leadership in the Community Impact category. Manitowoc Foodservice globally provides best-in-class foodservice equipment to McDonald's supply chain.
The Alternate Energy Utilization and Energy Savings Program project at our Eglfing, Germany, manufacturing facility pioneered use of renewable energy using locally-plentiful materials in creative collaboration with its neighboring community. The goal of the project was to reduce energy use and reduce our environmental footprint. Convotherm's partnership with the Village of Eglfing initiative to construct a power plant to produce steam from local renewable resources was a success as the plant began producing steam within 2 years. The steam produced by the power plant is used at the Convotherm manufacturing facility, and also by approximately 50 private households in the nearby area. Using the alternate fuel heating plant and the hydroelectric power supply saved approximately 1,000,000 kilograms of CO2 annually. In addition to the community collaboration, Convotherm focused additional efforts at their Eglfing facility.
"We are extremely proud of our work on the Alternate Energy Utilization and Energy Savings Program in Europe project and grateful for the recognition by McDonald's," said Dr. Martin Behle, vice president & general manager, Ovens & Advanced Cooking - EMEA. "We pride ourselves on challenging the status quo and delivering innovative ideas and solutions to our clients."
"The submissions in the Best of Sustainable Supply report demonstrate that our suppliers go above and beyond to provide sustainable leadership, and that they take their commitment to preserving resources as seriously as we do," said Jose Armario, executive vice president, McDonald's Global Supply Chain, Development & Franchising. "We are fortunate to work with such a diverse and dedicated group of suppliers to service our 35,000 global restaurants each day."
